OSCAR MICHEAUX’S LEGACY

Oscar Micheaux (1884 – 1951) was a pioneering African American author and filmmaker, and without a doubt the most famous producer of race films. He formed his own movie production company and in 1919 became the first African-American to make a film. He wrote, directed and produced the silent motion picture The Homesteader, starring the pioneering African American actress Evelyn Preer, based on his novel of the same name. He again used autobiographical elements in The Exile, his first feature film with sound, in which the central character leaves Chicago to buy and operate a ranch in South Dakota. In 1924, he introduced the moviegoing world to Paul Robeson in his film, Body and Soul.Given the times, his accomplishments in film are extraordinary, including being the first African-American to produce a film to be shown in “white” movie theaters. In his motion pictures, he moved away from the “Negro” stereotypes being portrayed in film at the time. Additionally, in his film Within Our Gates, Micheaux attacked the racism depicted in D.W. Griffith’s film, The Birth of a Nation. No different than Micheaux, one hundred years later, our goal is to serve and provide the community and filmmakers with a channel to bridge those same worlds of difference, as we continue to progress as a people.
The Producers Guild of America called him, “The most prolific Black – if not most prolific independent – filmmaker in American cinema.” Over his illustrious career, Oscar Micheaux wrote, produced and directed forty-four feature-length films between 1919 and 1948; he also wrote seven novels, one of which was a national bestseller.
We can’t thank you enough for supporting the festival and the filmmakers who have poured blood, sweat, and tears into their projects – in the name of artistic advancement. We ask that you continue to reflect and consider your own legacy and the mark that you will leave on the world. Because no different than Micheaux, your presence and support exemplifies your commitment to progressive change and representation – inclusive of all, within the domestic and global landscape.

OUR STORY

The Micheaux Film Festival was founded in 2018 by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Noel Braham, alongside early collaborators who shared a vision of creating a powerful, inclusive platform where overlooked and unique storytellers could be seen, heard, and celebrated. Those early relationships and community efforts helped lay the foundation for what Micheaux would become.

What began as a series of sold out community screenings inspired by the cultural impact of Issa Rae’s Insecure quickly evolved into an international, community driven platform dedicated to amplifying bold voices across film, television, and media.

From the beginning, Micheaux has existed to help, inspire, educate, and entertain creators who have historically been pushed to the margins of the industry. Rather than centering its own success, the festival was built to illuminate others and provide access, visibility, and connection for artists seeking meaningful opportunities.

In its inaugural year, the festival curated its entire programming lineup through grassroots outreach and donated proceeds to nonprofit organizations, reinforcing its commitment to community impact and cultural responsibility. Built with limited resources and sustained through the challenges of a global pandemic, Micheaux has grown through resilience, purpose, and the unwavering support of its creative community.

Inspired by the legacy of Oscar Micheaux, a pioneer who challenged barriers and redefined representation in cinema, the festival continues to serve as a catalyst for artistic expression, social dialogue, and cultural transformation. His belief in perseverance and self determination remains at the core of Micheaux’s mission.

Today, the Micheaux Film Festival stands as more than an event. It is a living ecosystem rooted in faith, integrity, and service, a space where creators are welcomed with authenticity, equity, and care. In an industry often shaped by gatekeeping and exclusion, Micheaux exists to counter that narrative by empowering independent artists and championing stories that reflect the full spectrum of human experience.

As the platform continues to evolve, Micheaux is committed to building strategic pathways that launch careers, foster collaboration, and redefine what access looks like in the creative industry.

The journey continues one story, one voice, and one bold vision at a time.
